OTHER
APPLICATIONS
Melanoma
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. The
incidence of melanoma, the rarest but most virulent form of skin
cancer, is increasing at the rate of 7% a year. Skin cancers are
often treated by excisional biopsy, if diagnosed early. ODIS can
be used to facilitate early identification and reduce unnecessary
biopsies.
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy and one of the leading
causes of death in women. Despite advances in digital mammography,
diagnosis of breast cancer continues to be plagued with a very high
false positive rate, thus creating a controversy about the real
value of mammography. The US healthcare system spends $5 billion
annually on x-ray mammograms each year. About one million women
in the US are recalled for biopsy, which turns out to be negative
in 65% to 80% of the cases. ODIS has powerful diagnostic capabilities
and can provide a valuable adjunct to mammography. This will lead
to a reduction in unnecessary biopsies and earlier intervention
in malignant cases.
Neonatology
470,000 premature infants per year in the US face respiratory distress,
oxygen-related blindness, necrotizing enterocolitis, and brain hemorrhage.
ODIS can monitor oxygen at specific organ sites, perform accurate
measurements at low levels and aid in early intervention in high
risk cases. ODISsey can provide simple, cost-effective monitoring
that helps improve outcomes and reduce cost.
